Towards a Socio-cognitive Theory of Information Systems: an Analysis of Key Philosophical and Conceptual Issues

A primary function of any information system is to help its users identify and solve problems in a social context. It follows that an appreciation of the realised value of an information system necessitates understanding of both the eeects of computer-based information systems on the individual's cognitive processes and its mediating r^ ole in group problem solving activities and the sharing of information and meanings. This paper presents a theory of individual problem solving based upon the social characteristics of knowledge, reasoning and action. The theory is used to consider the impacts of information and communication technologies on the individual and upon individuals engaged in collective problem solving activities. Several philosophical issues faced in developing such an integrative theory of psychological processes and social interaction are examined.
